Abstract
SGU has a 15 years old FMS produced by FESTO for the purpose of learning industrial automation in the laboratory using 3 substations: Storage (ASRS), Conveyor and Assembly. This FMS-103 is based on a discontinued FESTO Industrial PC (IPC) product and PLC, which places hurdle as some parts are no longer available, making the FMS renders not fully functional. The objective of this thesis is to retrofit the FMS to make the old FMS fully functional again. Conveyor substation is a system for transporting workpieces on palettes on top of a moving carrier. The carrier is equipped with RFID tag. Prior to this thesis, the conveyor belt system has been installed with OMRON PLC as replacement as an initial effort to retrofit, in this thesis work rather than using PLC again, the conveyor system is retrofitted using ARM-Cortex microcontroller to learn and prove that microcontroller can be used to control an industrial system efficiently. The advantage is that students can learn about microcontroller features to implement functionalities commonly performed by PLC.
