Abstract

The purpose of this thesis is to develop a machine vision to detect and measure a paper cup diameter that is integrated with the Festo conveyor station as the transport system for the paper cup. Webcam camera is used to capture the paper cup image which is used as the main input image to be processed using Qt Creator and OpenCV library. The Festo conveyor station is controlled by using microcontroller and the communication between the machine vision and the Festo conveyor station is established using Firmata protocol. A pneumatic system that consist of solenoid valve and relay circuit to control it, is integrated to the system to alert the user of the paper cup that is not within tolerance. The thesis work has proved to be able to detect and measure the paper cup with a resolution of 0.1 mm. 3 algorithms have been used and compared to detect and measure the paper cup. Integration between the machine vision and conveyor system is also successful which enable the conveyor station trigger the machine vision process and vice versa.
