Abstract
Festo Modular Production System (MPS) stations have been developed by Festo Didactic for vocational training purposes in automation and technology field. The existing MPS stations are controlled using Programmable Logic Control, S7-300 developed by Siemens. The purpose of this thesis is to retrofit the existing MPS Distribution and Testing stations. Microcontroller Unit (MCU) is implemented in the MPS stations as an alternative control system other than PLC. All sensors and actuators were checked to make sure that all the mechanics, pneumatics and electrical aspects worked. A voltage level translator circuit has to be developed as an interface between the MPS stations and the MCU as the operating at different voltage levels. To improve protection of the MCU against accidental failure in the higher voltages system of the MPS stations, signal isolation circuit was developed using industrial standard IC from Silicon Labs. The sequencing algorithm of the distribution and testing stations has to be developed to control the stations. Developing a simple Graphical User Interface (GUI) to the MPS Distribution and Testing stations was done as control elements (push buttons and switches) to control the sequences of the MPS stations. Microcontroller is chosen it is more flexible platform to all systems including Internet of Things (IOT). The system is tested and worked well both in manual and automatic modes.
