Abstract
As the focus on renewable energy in Indonesia has been growing recently, interest in the design of wind turbines has also been expanding. Although in today’s market, the horizontal axis wind turbine is the most common type, but vertical axis wind turbines (Darrieus) have certain advantages. One of the main advantages of VAWTs is the ability to harness the energy contained in moving air coming omni-directionally or it is suitable for urban areas. The main flaw with their design is their inability to self-start. This report describes the design, construction, and testing of a Darrieus turbine using different type of blades, which are NACA 0012, NACA0015, and GOE501, that can rotate at low wind speed (4 m/s) in Indonesia. The study of different behaviour of the blades will be discussed too. The design of the turbine will be made in Solidworks. The results will be simulated using OpenFoam and be observed using Paraview. Lastly, the prototype is made and will be tested at the rooftop of SGU.
