Abstract

In recent years, brushless DC (BLDC) motor is receiving much interest in many applications. As the name implies, brushless DC motor doesn’t use brush to perform commutation, the commutation is performed by control electronics. Due to this reason, brushless DC motor has far more superior advantages compare to a brushed DC motor. However, complex control is required to commutate a BLDC motor. There is various type of control scheme that is available nowadays, where a proper choice of control strategies must be determined by considering some aspects like system cost, control complexity, and performance. The purpose of this thesis is to implement a different type of motor control algorithm based on Trapezoidal Control and Field Oriented Control. During the implementation, different types of techniques are being tested, including modulation techniques (block commutation & space vector modulation), rotor position acquisition techniques (hall sensors, incremental encoder, sliding mode observer), and speed detection techniques (based on period measurement of hall signals & based on rotor angle). Speed and torque control will also be introduced in this thesis. In the end, several testing including signal waveform observation & current measurement were made to see if the techniques implemented are working properly.
