Abstract

Parkinson’s Disease is a progressive disorder of the nervous system that affects movement and control of the body. It is caused by the progressive degeneration of dopamine containing cells inside the brain. This research is intended to find a way to increase dopamine level in the body to minimize, or deter Parkinson’s Disease symptoms by means of a natural source. Based on scientific journal and researches, it is known that L-DOPA, a precursor to dopamine, can be found in Mucuna pruriens seeds, and that caffeine can stimulate dopamine productions in the brain. Both options were used for the experiment, Mucuna pruriens seeds were fed to mice, and caffeine was given to humans to drink in form of coffee. Research method is done using ELISA procedure. From the ELISA test, it was concluded that Mucuna pruriens does increase dopamine in mice, and that coffee also increases dopamine level in humans. One cup of coffee a day showed minimal changes, while two cups showed a significant increase in dopamine level.
