Abstract

The era of fossil fuels is coming to an end. Due to scarcity and global warming issues, renewable energy becomes a need rather than just an interest. Biodiesel, one of the renewable energies, plays a great role in the transportation sector as it can replace the usage of diesel fuel. The fact that biodiesel is clean, renewable, and biodegradable, makes it even more demanded. Despite having countless advantages compared to diesel fuel, biodiesel also has disadvantages. One major drawback of biodiesel is the fact that it is vulnerable to oxidation when exposed to atmosphere. Due to the presence of unsaturated fatty acid, biodiesel is easily oxidized during long-term storage, leading to the risk of engine damage. One clear solution to this problem is trough antioxidant addition. As a phenolic synthetic antioxidant, tert-Butylhydroquinone (TBHQ) has been proven for its effectiveness in preventing biodiesel oxidation. However, the difference in polarity between polar phenolic antioxidants and non-polar biodiesel yields to low solubility. Several studies have been conducted in order to find the best method to improve the solubility of phenolic antioxidants in biodiesel. In this study, the potential of TBHQ as antioxidant additive for biodiesel as well as the possible alternative methods to increase its solubility were reviewed.
