Abstract

National independency is required for our national supremacy which includes independency in drugs sector. According to the Ministry of Health’s data (2012), 95% of drug materials in Indonesia were imported from overseas. Therefore, some necessary steps need to be conducted to solve this problem. The availability of drugs potential from natural resources is allowing us to accelerate this process and to reduce required cost which is by applying screening methods. This method will be far more effective than conventional ones which are usually practiced. There are at least three major issues faced by Indonesia in order to perform drug discovery by using the above method. Firstly, unavailability of compounds or extracts in sufficient numbers either in the form of single compounds or crude extracts. Secondly, unavailability of required technology such as high throughput screening which allows the screening process in a large number of extracts and in a relatively shorter period of time. Thirdly, limited human resources with required skills to carry out the research in this area. The objective of this activity is to socialize the idea of developing extract library (extract bank) and to make this activity become a national agenda. This is to accelerate drug discovery from Indonesian biodiversity. To achieve the later goal, some strategic steps are necessary to be done which include but not limited to establishment of a national consortium, the establishment of Center of Excellent and capacity building for human resources of all levels from researchers until technician involved in this research
