Abstract

Indonesia has a lot of wind energy potential but generally wind condition in Indonesia is low speed. This paper is explaining about Helical Savonius VAWT designed for low wind speed condition and its prototyping. Helical Savonius VAWT is very good for varying wind direction and unlike ordinary Savonius, it has no opposite torque direction. Research is performed using SOLIDWORKS for drawing, OpenFOAM for CFD simulation and Paraview for performing post processing. Small scale prototyping is performed in cooperation with Selat Anyar Workshop. In the end, this turbine reached efficiency of 76.6% in CFD simulation. Prototyping is made to ensure that this design is workable and to verify the simulation result. However, verification is unable to proceed because of circumstances on the campus building where the infrastructure is planted.
