Abstract

Movie as a medium of storytelling has the power in informing, educating and shaping its audience. Therefore, this research on Portrayal of Gender Roles in Marriage in The Movie “Hijab” (2015) is necessary to see how men and women are being portrayed in the movie, which could bring impact to the viewer on how they see gender. Through Mise-en-Scène analysis, the elements that are analyzed are angle, framing, colour and facial expression, with its dialogue being examined with Barthes’s semiotics analysis, which then later matched with theoretical basis on semiotics and feminism, that further verified by the result of interview from various subject such as feminist, high priest and producer of the movie. The result of the study then revealed that the portrayal of gender roles in the movie “Hijab” is still highly stereotypical which confirmed by the three sources, that women are still placed in the domestic realm.
