Abstract

The purpose of this research is to explore the possible of news frames' differences in news coverage of cases involving Muslim and non-Muslim perpetrators. Using Robert N. Entman's salient aspects in framing, this research studies about how particular information regarding two similar terrorism incidents are regarded as important by online news media. The research uses frame analysis for the further investigation on the frames contained in online news articles and interview with experts in the media. The incidents chosen for this research are the Manchester bombing during the closing set of American pop singer Ariana Grande's concert which was conducted by a Muslim perpetrator and the mass shooting in Las Vegas during the concert of American country singer Jason Aldean which was conducted by a non-Muslim perpetrator. The results of the findings are different as Muslim is portrayed as terrorist while the non-Muslim perpetrator is not, although both cases are similar in terms of number of victims and the type of the attack (mass killing).
