Abstract

Particle size reduction has become an integral part for pharmaceutical development and production. The techniques available for particle size reductions are vary with different mechanism, specification, and requirements. As the technique affects the process efficiency and effectivity, the selection of the right equipment becomes crucial. This study proposed an equipment selection system for recommending equipment for particle size reduction process as well as the priorities index. The equipment selection system built in the form of flowchart that consists of 8 questions relating to the 8 critical parameters of the selection. By following the questions in the equipment selection system, the user could obtain the information of recommended equipment. In addition, a simple computerized equipment selection system was devised to ease the selection process. Furthermore, 3 models; Metformin, Ibuprofen, and Benzoyl peroxide; were used to validate the system by running simulations for those models, which resulted in the recommendation of Disc mill for Metformin with the total priorities index of 1000, Jet mill for Ibuprofen and Benzoyl peroxide with the total priorities index of 480 and 1000.
