Abstract
Heterogeneous superbase catalyst Na/NaOH/γ-Al2O3 is a solid base catalyst which demonstrates several advantages: easy and cheap catalyst recovery, environmentally friendly and, simpler product separation. Previous study showed that heterogeneous superbase catalyst Na/NaOH/γ-Al2O3 had the ability to catalyze dimerization reaction via oxidative coupling mechanism. The effect of the superbase catalyst on the dimerization of ascorbic acid was studied. Three reaction times were observed: one hour, two hours, and three hours. The clear solution of ascorbic acid dissolved in distilled water was transformed into a pinkish solution after 1 hour of reaction. Analysis of the product using TLC showed no significant different between three reaction times. Identification of the dimerization product was done using LC-MS analysis which showed the possibility that the product formed was dimeric dehydroascorbic acid (DDHA). The product mixture produced in this research had very low antioxidant activity compared to ascorbic acid.
