Abstract
Occupational fatalities in Indonesian construction sites are on the rise and the government wants to halt infrastructure projects. More research and insight on Indonesia’s poor occupational safety is needed. The purpose of this research is to identify whether or not the suspected variables of training and motivation truly influence safety and afterwards, to give human resource advice to construction companies in Jakarta. This research gathers quantitative primary data from safety managers from Jakarta construction companies, since not enough published research has been done in Indonesia concerning safety and a specific problem can be addressed more effectively. Secondary data is also used using previous studies and literature from other countries. The data is gathered using a Likert questionnaire and subsequently analysed through multiple regression analysis. The findings revealed that training and motivation has an influence towards safety, however motivation had the more significant influence and is the point of focus. Training upper level managers, though still important, is not the most important factor. More observation should be placed on rewarding, improving the working relationships between managers and employees. The safety infrastructure of an entire country will not change over-night. It can however, start.
