Abstract

PT. Gajah Tunggal as a local leading tire manufacturing in Indonesia, continuously improving their process to give the best quality to their customer. Material measurement has become a must standard in the working method. All the material should be measured in correctly so can produce a best product. Tread, one of materials on building machine need to be measured the length before cut per piece and assembly on Tire Building machine. Some errors found out on tread length measurement that there is error deviation on the actual length. The setting parameter on tread length is difference with the actual cut tread. The measurement was done by using servo motor encoder calculation. Checking for empty conveyor and the result is good, but when applied with tread, there is a slip and make the difference length between setting parameter with actual tread length. After checking from machine A20 and A22, there is Cpk value 0.163 and 0.110. The Cpk value indicate that the process have big variation. To solve the problem, tread applier on building machine need to modify to eliminate error from tread slipping. Tread applier should have tool that make sure the tread length before its cut by the cutter. The result of the observation is design of “Tread Length Measurement” that using rotary encoder and photoelectric sensor. Rotary encoder function is to count the length and photoelectric sensor used to trigger the encoder. Before modification, the length of tread is measured by servo motor that drive the conveyor. Modification purpose is to count the length of tread by rotary encoder. Rotary encoder connected with wheel that contact the tread on top side. The wheel surface will be rough surface to minimize the slip. Encoder will count actual tread that through the wheel. photoelectric sensor that placed 1500 mm after encoder’s wheel will trigger increment value from rotary encoder and program will stop the conveyor after length value is reached. Then the tread will cut.
