Abstract

Nowadays, people enjoy spending time on social media, such as Facebook, Twitter, Path or Instagram. Based on The Ministry of Communication and Information Technology (2013) reveals that Indonesia has 56 million internet users. 95% of them use internet to access social media. In this thesis, Facebook with over 750 million active users worldwide is the chosen because Facebook provides different functions or activities to attract people’s attention, for both male and female (Sumner, Byers & Shearing, 2011). Based on the 5-factor model of personality by John and Srivastava (1999), the personality of a person consists of five personality traits: extraversion, agreeableness, conscientiousness, neuroticism, and openness to experience. However, according to previous study, only Extraversion and Openness to Experience do have significance on Facebook activity (Kuo & Tang, 2014). The objective of this study explore the influence of these two personality traits and gender (males and females) on Facebook activities, which are posting, commenting, liking, tagging and checking-in. The results in this study show that Extraversion and Openness to Experience have significant impact on Facebook activities. Secondly, the interaction between gender and Extraversion is significant by only on ‘checking-in’. Furthermore, the interaction between Extraversion and Openness to Experience on Facebook activities is significance only for ‘commenting’, ‘liking’ and ‘tagging’.
