Abstract

Technology has reached a stage where illnesses and disorders are easily treatable and limits of the human body are near obsolete. Among these advancements is the development of prosthetics and orthotics to aid physically challenged and disorderly people by providing them with the ability to use their limbs with the strength and precision matching that of the healthy person. Exoskeletons, for instance, are now commonly used to stand, walk, and interact with objects such as holding them or lifting them up by people who are otherwise unable to given various health reasons. This research aims to create a lightweight knee exoskeleton to aid users with problems in their lower limbs, their knee especially, and help them simulate standing and walking using equally lightweight actuators and a system comprised of a microcontroller, a motion sensor, solenoid valves, as well as various other electric and pneumatic components to provide feedback and allow closed-loop control.
