Abstract

Heterogenous superbase catalyst Na/NaOH/γ-Al2O3 is a solid base catalyst with several advantages such as ease in product separation, environmental friendly and less cost required for catalyst recovery. The superbase catalyst Na/NaOH/γ-Al2O3 was used in previous researches for double bond shifting in isomerization and dimerization reaction via oxidative coupling mechanism. The superbase catalyst Na/NaOH/γ-Al2O3 was used to modify ferulic acid with variation in concentration ratio and temperature. The different concentration ratio between ferulic acid and superbase catalyst are 1:1, 1:2 and 2:1 conducted at room temperature, 37 °C and 45 °C. The kinetics of ferulic acid modification was studied. The reaction with the ratio 1:2 at room temperature was favored to be the most suitable condition for ferulic acid modification. The clear solution of ferulic acid dissolved in methanol turned hazy after reaction with superbase catalyst in nitrogen rich system. Identification of the modification product was carried out using LC-MS analysis and the observation showed the possibility in formation of dimer ferulic acid, tetramer ferulic acid, coniferyl aldehyde and tetramer coniferyl aldehyde at retention time 11.637.
